I moved to Greenville, South Carolina in January 2013 to pursue an opportunity I could not pass up. Community Journals offered me a role as Art Director of their new weekly, Upstate Business Journal. I knew the family running the company and I had a great respect for their vision for the market between Charlotte and Atlanta (appropriately referred to as "Char-lanta"). Greenville and the surrounding areas were on the rise and it was an exciting time to be cutting my teeth on a business publication.
The UBJ was a 32-page newsprint magazine that I designed from Monday at noon to Tuesday at roughly 10 pm. A steady stream of story submissions would populate my Dropbox folder until 6 pm day of print. I was a mad man throwing together layouts from raw intuition with no time to look back. Aside from design, I was also my own Photography Director and Production Manager. Every team member wore any and every hat that fit. Our team produced an absurd volume of content and I tip my hat to them. We also designed and built a website from the ground up which has since gained a lot of traction in the Greenville-Spartanburg community. I spent eight months at Community Journals and produced 30 issues before I was offered a position back in Charleston. I am indebted to Mark and Ryan Johnston for giving me the opportunity and the liberty to create a style of my own.
